The Picnic: Shell Synergy Truck

Energy efficient vehicle design for Shell´s #makethefuture

The marketing agency The Picnic tasked Mormedi with re-imagining the future of the food truck experience through the design and manufacture of an innovative new vehicle. The food truck, made for Shell’s #makethefuture festival, was an example of energy efficient design and the result of the collaboration between engineering students, entrepreneurs, designers and manufacturers.

Our challenge

The objective of the food truck was three-fold. First, it was meant to showcase six innovative energy focused Shell-backed startups; Insolar, MotionECO, Bio-Bean, Capture Mobility, Gravity Light and Pavegen. Second, it was meant to engage engineering students and startup entrepreneurs in a collaborative design process through specific hackathon events. Finally, it was meant as a cooking stage for a celebrity chef during a series of event activations. These events were an opportunity for Shell to engage with their target audience, Energy Engaged Millennials, and inform them about sustainable initiatives within the company.

 
 
 

Our path

Due to the tight schedule for designing, building and delivering the vehicle, the team started by investigating the viability of different technical strategies like the type of chassis and manufacturing methods. Once the technical constraints were specified, the team secured a manufacturer for the build. 

Tecnove was chosen due to their expertise in tailor-made vehicles in general, and food trucks in particular. The team decided to design the vehicle around Tecnove’s strengths and incorporate a movable gull wing concept and deployable kitchen to maximize the functional area of the kitchen. The production of the vehicle, from start-to-finish only lasted two months and was carried out in Tecnove’s manufacturing plant in Ciudad Real, Spain.

Our achievements

The truck was unveiled in May 2017 at Shell’s #makethefuture festival in London, a perfect opportunity since it was also the venue for the European Eco-Marathon, Shell’s biggest collaboration event with universities around the world. The truck was praised during the event by both employees and visitors due to the innovative use of energy saving technologies and the 360º degree experience it delivered. This immersive experience was enhanced thanks to its openness and use of transparent surfaces that not only maximized the use of natural light and ventilation, but also helped strengthen the visual communication between the kitchen and of the food truck.

The Shell Synergy Truck will be participating at several events in Europe during Summer 2017.
