The design of urban transport vehicles is complex as it has to combine usability and efficiency with a nice and integrated design into the city. Tempus should collect these precepts, providing an attractive and distinctive style over the competitors.
Our main challenge was to translate the technical novelty of this product in a stimulating design for a vehicle with a fresh and distinctive look that reflects the innovation and technology incorporated at Tempus.
We evaluated all the features of competitors and how they faced the challenge of aesthetics and internal transport capacity. We analyzed the technical complexities and regulations in transportation, besides the use, problems and user expectations.
At the design phase, we developed several 3D and handmade concepts. We distributed three different spaces: the back, as a lounge area for longer journeys. The central area is conceived as a living space. And the front entrance area as a pleasant lobby which receives and redirects the users to other parties.
We have translated all user requirements and Tempus technical innovation into a cool urban style, emphasizing on functionality, safety and comfort. We conceived wide glazed areas to enjoy the scenery and a comfortable space for standing passengers.
Tempus circulates in the center of cities like Madrid (in several lines of EMT). It was presented at the FIAA 2008 exhibition, where it was chosen as “Bus of the Year in Spain 2009”. In addition, it has been awarded with a Red Dot Design Award in 2009 and a Korean good Design Product in 2012.
“Innovation is synonymous with survival. The ones not able to add value to products will be doomed to suffer brutal competition from countries with cheaper labor work."
