Philip Morris International and Azkoyen: Creating an iconic cigarette vending experience

Philip Morris and their vending machine manufacter, Azkoyen, tasked us with helping them define the future of tobacco vending machines. 


Our challenge

To create a premium experience for the consumer and have greater vending machine prominence within establishments.


Our path

To create this experience, we conducted market researches in Austria and Switzerland, where we interviewed users and owners of premises; we designed an experience map and established design guidelines for the product considering variables of aesthetics, ergonomics, usability and maintenance.

We designed a modular machine adaptable to all types of environments, being part of their implementation form beginning to end, from the concept to its production; advising PMI and Azkoyen throughout its development.

Lastly we create a new user interface that would make the buying process to be more efficient and enjoyable.

Our achievements

With a user-friendly interface and improved ergonomics, the final design stood out for its overall aesthetic qualities and modular characteristics. This allowed for customisation of branding, pack-slots and even the overall machine size. By bringing the vending machine back to centre stage, Mormedi also opened up additional opportunities for our client to sell a set of related accessories (that we designed).
